De schuilplaats van God

Caretaker couple

The house is managed by rotating caretaker couples.

The Current caretaker Couple

We, André and Agnes Pouw, along with our little son Emanuel, have the privilege of living as hosts at El Refugio de Dios until April 1. What a blessing! It is such a beautiful place, filled with the peace and presence of God.
Whether we are welcoming guests to share experiences, engage in worship, or simply spending time alone tending to the house and surroundings, we constantly feel God’s nearness. The sun shines abundantly, and nature flourishes all around us.
Being part of Spanish life brings new experiences and meaningful encounters with the local community, making this journey even more special.

Interested in becoming a caretaker couple?
We are looking for couples starting from April 1, 2025, for a minimum period of three months. CAMA Zending conducts the interviews and assesses who is interested and available for which period.

Who are we looking for?
Do you serve Jesus with all your heart? Do you value hospitality and enjoy providing a safe place where others can find restoration? If so, this might be the perfect opportunity for you!

What are the responsibilities of a caretaker couple?
As a caretaker couple, you set the spiritual atmosphere of the house. This means that following Jesus in all things, having a heart for hospitality, and a willingness to serve others are essential. Your responsibilities include: Managing daily tasks such as grocery shopping, cooking, and maintenance work in and around the house. Overseeing the daily operations of the house and garden, ensuring everything runs smoothly.

How does a caretaker couple support themselves?
As a caretaker couple, you live in the house and take care for it. Having your own car is essential. When there are guests the couple also can eat with them and they are supported in the household by guests. When there are no guests the couple has to pay for themselves. So it is important to have soms savings or financially support.

Can families with children apply?
We are open to this possibility and would be happy to discuss the options with you if you are interested.

Frequently asked questions

Can we bring our pet?
In principle, we are open to this, as long as your pet can peacefully coexist with our resident cats.

Is it cold in winter?
Between December and March, temperatures can drop below freezing at night. However, during sunny days, temperatures typically reach around 18°C.

How hot does it get in summer?
In July and August, temperatures can rise above 40°C. In June and September, they range between 30-35°C.

Do we need to bring winter clothing?
Yes! It can get quite cold in winter. Spanish houses are not insulated like those in the Netherlands, so it can be chilly indoors as well. The house has four wood stoves, but usually, only the stove in the central area is used.

What else should we consider?
We require couples to visit in advance so they can see the house and location before committing.

Being a host couple here can be impactful. Many deep conversations take place around the kitchen table, and hearing guests’ stories can sometimes touch personal wounds. Therefore, we strongly recommend that host couples undergo a debriefing with InToMission after their time here, to process their experiences and find closure.

Do we need insurance?
Yes, a host couple must have a special Spanish insurance policy for the duration of their stay. They can arrange this themselves when they arrive in Spain.
